Gravel Driveway Installation & Maintenance

Gravel Driveway

Adding Fresh Gravel

  • Periodically refresh your driveway by adding new gravel, especially in areas where it has thinned or compacted.
  • We begin by using blade tines to pull existing gravel back to the surface and re-level the entire driveway. Only then do we apply a new gravel cap, if desired.
  • Creating a slight crown down the center of the drive promotes proper drainage.
  • During evaluations, we look for low spots and potholes. This is a common issue caused by mud in our sandy loam soils, allowing the stone to be pushed down.
  • Adding a new gravel layer every few years will maintain both depth and appearance.
  • Weed barrier fabric is available during installation to help minimize unwanted growth.
Edge Maintenance:
  • We can help with installation of borders to keep gravel from spreading.
  • Use of durable materials to clearly define the driveway edges.

Clearing Debris:

  • Remove leaves, twigs, and other debris that can accumulate on the surface and hinder drainage.
  • Regularly clear debris to prevent it from getting lodged between the gravel and causing unevenness.

Monitor Drainage:

  • Ensure proper drainage to prevent water from pooling and causing erosion or potholes.
  • Consider installing drainage trenches if water tends to pool at the edges.
  • Fill potholes with fresh gravel and compact them to restore the surface.
  • For erosion on slopes, install water bars or French drains to divert water.

Weed Control:

  • Promptly remove weeds that grow through the gravel.
  • Consider using a weed killer designed for paths and gravel.
